What Is YSEALI?

An initiative launched in 2013 by the U.S. Department of State, the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) aims to strengthen leadership development in Southeast Asia. Beginning with the first cohort in the fall of 2015, UConn has hosted YSEALI Academic Fellows each fall and spring to take part in the YSEALI student exchange. YSEALI is supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative participants are among over 40,000 individuals participating in U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year. For more than sixty years, ECA has funded and supported programs that seek to promote mutual understanding and respect between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Other ECA programs include the Fulbright Program and the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. Here at the University of Connecticut, the YSEALI program is led by the Global Training & Development Institute within the Office of Global Affairs. President Biden Dedicates the Dodd Center for Human Rights

On October 15th, 2021, the University of Connecticut was honored to host the President of the United States Joe Biden, where he joined students, faculty, staff, supporters, the Dodd family, and leaders from across our state for the dedication of The Dodd Center for Human Rights. The “Human Rights for the Next Generation” program honored the public service and human rights legacy of the late U.S. Senator Thomas J. Dodd and former Senator Christopher J. Dodd. The Dodd Center was built in 1995 to preserve and extend the legacy of Connecticut Senator and Nuremberg International Military Tribunal executive trial counsel Thomas J. Dodd. The Dodd Center for Human Rights is home to rich and diverse human rights programs and resources. Within its walls reside the Human Rights Institute and its Dodd Impact programs, the Center for Judaic Studies & Contemporary Jewish Life, and the Library’s Archives & Special Collections. -------------------------------- The Human Rights Institute (HRI), situated in the University of Connecticut’s Office of Global Affairs and housed in the Dodd Center for Human Rights, advances human rights research, education, and public engagement. In 2020, Dodd Human Rights Impact joined HRI to leverage the synergies of UConn human rights programs and create one of the most dynamic interdisciplinary institutes anywhere in the world.
